Jhatka (جھٹکا, “a jolt”) shows the real rupee cost of paying a foreign‑currency price with a Pakistani debit or credit card — the sticker price plus your bank's FX markup and the FBR taxes that get added at checkout. Type any amount above and share the result.

Why does a $10 charge cost more than PKR 2,800?

When you pay an international merchant in dollars — ChatGPT, GitHub, Steam, AWS, a hotel abroad — the amount is converted to rupees at your bank's exchange rate, and then three things are stacked on top:

1. Card / bank FX markup (~4.5%). A margin the bank and card network add over the mid‑market rate on international point‑of‑sale and online transactions. It varies by bank, which is why Jhatka lets you set your own.

2. Withholding / advance tax (5% filer, 10% non‑filer). Collected by the bank on international card spending and adjustable against your annual FBR return. Filers on the Active Taxpayer List pay half the rate non‑filers do.

3. Sales tax (5%). FED / provincial sales tax on the transaction fee.

Add them up and a “$10” subscription can land around PKR 3,300+ — the jolt Jhatka is named after.

Filer vs non‑filer: worth it?

On card spend alone the difference is 5% vs 10% withholding. On a PKR 100,000/year of international subscriptions that's roughly PKR 5,000 saved just by being on the Active Taxpayer List — before counting every other filer benefit. Toggle the two above to see it on your own numbers.

Frequently asked

Why is my card charge higher than the price shown?

Because the shown price is in dollars/euros. Your bank converts it, adds an FX markup (~4.5%), plus FBR withholding tax (5% filer / 10% non‑filer) and 5% sales tax. Jhatka sums all of that into one PKR figure.

What's the difference between filer and non‑filer?

Active taxpayers (filers) are charged 5% advance tax on international card transactions; non‑filers are charged 10%. Being a filer roughly halves that part of the bill.

Does this apply to Netflix, YouTube or Spotify?

No. Netflix, YouTube Premium and Spotify bill Pakistan in local rupees, so there's no FX conversion, bank markup or card withholding to add — the price you see is the price you pay. Jhatka is for services billed in USD (ChatGPT, Claude, GitHub, Steam, hosting, etc.), which is what the dropdown lists.

Is the exchange rate accurate?

Jhatka uses the live mid‑market rate from open.er-api.com, cached for an hour. Your bank's rate on the day may differ slightly, so treat the total as a close estimate, not a bank statement.

Can I set my own bank's fees?

Yes — open “Customize for my bank” and set the FX markup to match a past statement. WHT and sales tax are statutory and follow your filer status.

Do you store my data?

No. Calculations run in your browser and nothing you type is stored. Anonymous, aggregate usage analytics only.
